What does “Bank” imply for? The word Bank signifies to supply, store or reserve for future use. Semen Banking in India – also known as Semen cryopreservation and semen freezing; in semen banking, there gets the collection of semen for future use (for those couples who want to delay their parenthood/ beneficial for the childless couples wherein the male wants the donor sperm to begin fatherhood). Semen is donated either by the sperm donors (after complete screening test by the centre’s management) or by those males who want to preserve their semen for later use. The semen gets preserved by the technique known as cryopreservation.

Cryopreserved semen can be stored indefinitely and used whenever required. It has been found the human semen sample can be stocked-up for as long as twenty years.

There are several reasons why there is the requirement of semen banking in India;

  • Male partner decides to undergo the procedure of vasectomy, but at the same time, he or his partner wants to have the option to conceive at a later date, for this condition, the male chooses to preserve his sperm into the Semen Banking in India.
  • The male, if having any severe disease, such as cancer and about to undergo the chemotherapy procedure, then semen banking in India is the best option for the man to protect his fertility for future use. Chemotherapy undeniably affects the fertility and damages the motility and quality of the sperm. If the male has any plans for parenthood at a specific time and undergoing such treatments- then preserving the semen in semen bank is the best choice.
  • Infertile male, if seeking the option to undergo IVF with donor sperm, they can knock the door of Semen Banking in India.
  • Couple who desires to undergo assisted reproductive technique at different place and the partner is unavailable for the IVF procedure (providing semen sample) then the male partner stores the semen for use by ART to achieve conception by the technique of cryopreservation in the Semen banking in India.

The Procedure of Cryopreservation in India

If possible, you will be requested a period of 3-5 days of abstinence from ejaculation before producing a specimen for storage. It usually takes males 3-5 days to produce a semen sample with optimal sperm count (the quality of the sperm may deteriorate over shorter or longer periods of abstinence).

It is preferred that the specimen be obtained by manual stimulation (masturbation). There are private rooms at the facility that may be used for this purpose. If you choose to produce the sample at home, please do not use any lubricants as these products may compromise the quality of the sample. The sample must be collected in a sterile container, which you may obtain from our laboratory, and brought to WE CARE IVF SURROGACY within 60 minutes from production. It is essential that the specimen be kept at body temperature during transit.

The semen once obtained by the Semen Banking in India, the next process is to analyze the sperm count and also the sperm movement. Based on the volume or amount of the semen sample provided by the male, the sample is placed in the sterile straws, immediately sealed. Once the semen gets packed in the plastic vial, the procedure of freezing or cryopreservation is done by the specialists of the lab.

The vial (flask of semen) is labeled identically and then placed in the metal storage container (liquid nitrogen vapor) at –196°C / -320°F.

This procedure of freezing and preserving the semen sample is known as cryopreservation.

Processing –

To ensure accurate identification, an accession number and a can number is assigned to his specimen from the moment it is received.

A complete semen analysis is then performed. This includes semen volume, liquefaction and viscosity, sperm count, motility, forward progression, and morphology.

The specimen is then processed either as intracervical insemination (ICI) units or intrauterine insemination (IUI) units and stored in 0.5 ml sterile straws. Each straw is labeled with his name, social security number, date, accession number, and can number. A small portion of his specimen is drawn into a separate straw for a post- thaw analysis, which is performed the following business day to assess your specimen cryosurvival. The straws are then placed in a metal storage canister labeled identically and stored under liquid nitrogen.

Testing –

All client-depositors are required to be tested for a number of infectious diseases as required by licensing and accrediting agencies. A technician will draw blood at the time of the initial visit. Screening will be performed by a licensed independent laboratory routinely used by the We Care IVF Surrogacy Laboratories.

The required screening includes HIV-1, HIV-2, HTLV-I, HTLV-II, Hepatitis B surface Antigen, Hepatitis B core Antibody, Hepatitis C Viral Antibody, Syphilis, CMV, and Gonorrhea Culture.
