How does it work?
A surrogate mother typically conceives after being artificially inseminated by IUI with the man's sperm (the man is usually the biological father). More recently, sophisticated assisted conception treatmentshave made it possible for a surrogate to carry a baby that is completely the biological child of the infertile couple. This is achieved by using an embryo conceived through in vitro fertilisation (IVF) or a similar method, and is known as partial, gestational, or host IVF surrogacy. It is also possible for a surrogate to carry a donated embryo to term.
The infertile couple usually pays the surrogate mother's expenses along with additional legal and agency fees as a legal contract is involved. Expenses can include travel, maternity clothes and loss of earnings.
How long does it take?
